(Lagenaria siceraria)
This is an edible gourd at its best when 6" long. It is slightly sweet and tender at this size and holds its shape when cooked. Peel skin and clean out seed cavity before cooking. If not harvested young they can grow up to 4' long. This is a pale green strain with a lemon yellow interior. The plants are vigorous vines. 54 days to young fruit.

The young shoots on the vine tips and leaves are delicious and nutritious when cooked. The fruit is excellent boiled, steamed, fried or cooked in sauce. The seed cavity must be cleaned out before cooking. You can eat the cooked seeds but not the fibers that surround them. The germination of the seeds can be improved by carefully nipping the tip of the shell at the root end. Edible gourds have beautiful night blooming white flowers. If there are no night pollinators in your area you can improve fruit set with hand pollination. The plants are tolerant of extreme heat and humidity.
10-15 days, 70-75F. Start early indoors in pots and transplant after last spring frost. Soak seeds in warm water overnight before seeding. Germination rates can be improved by clipping a shallow slice (with toenail clippers) off side of seed near the pointed end. Can also be seeded directly in the field in warm climates after soil temperature is 72F.

Sowing: Sow seeds in a sunny location when all danger of frost is past, or indoors 3-4 week before the last frost.
Care: Water regularly and fertilize when lateral runners begin to spread.
Harvest: To eat pick when fruits are small. For gourds allow fruits to ripen on the vine. Pick carefully.
